you asked about the greatest marathoner, Hall? Radcliffe? You just know it has to be my man Phidippides because without him we would all be staying on the couch instead of getting out there.

Best marathoner has to be Radcliffe, I could go on about her records and the fact that she has 4 of the 5 best times ever. But the simple fact for me that wins it every time is her marathon world record would still have her finishing about 1k ahead of her closest rival. Now thats amazing

My heart says Haile Gebrselassie. Before I took up running I'd heard of him, heck - even my wife has! The reverence with which he's held yet the modesty which he deals with it is a mark of the man.
All that goes to make him a true ambassador for running in general, his quality in marathons over such a long time just makes him a great in the discipline itself.

My head says Paul Tergat - he did it over a slightly longer period and is equally well regarded - just not as fast as Haile! That said, times will always get quicker so with that in mind, he gets my vote.

Would have been amazing to see those two race against each other.

    Top Marathoner?
    Has to be Sammy Wanjiru....
The way he tore the field apart at Beijing (in searing heat) with no pacemakers was incredible
    Loved this at Chicago also

Best bits: For me I was most shocked by the News on the "World Age Group Marathon Records (www.arrs.net)". A 14 year old girl can run a faster marathon than me, WOW.

The true test of Radcliffe's is bared out by the fact that her marathon world record is one of the highest IAAF world ranking points of all time, better tham Michael Johnsons 400m record, better than Flo Jo's 100m and 200m and equal to a 9.75 mens 100m.

On the women's side the first four finishers at the inaugural Olympic marathon are worth a mention in any discussion of the best ever. A podium of Joan Benoit, Greta Waitz and Rosa Mota would be hard to beat, but Ingrid Kristiansen in 4th might have been the best of the lot. There is no doubt that Paula's world record is up there with Bob Beaman, Seb Coe and Usain Bolt for being stunning single performances but it is not a one horse race for "best ever"

On the men's side I like the suggestion of Phidippides, although there is no doubt he didn't get his pacing and nutrition/ hydration strategies quite right, he failed to follow up a strong first outing and his fame may owe something to good publicists. I'd say toss a coin between Tergat and Gebrselassie now with a strong case for Wanjiru if he maintains his current level of performance for a few more years.
