All about running. By runners, for runners.

Episode 68 - Sister Madonna Buder

Released: Wednesday 27th April 2011

Since her first ever run over thirty years ago, 81 year old Sister Madonna Buder has completed a combined total of more than 80 marathons and Ironman triathlons. Last weekend she finished the Bston Marathon in just over five hours and later this year will attempt to open the 80-84 age category at the Hawaii Ironman. All that made Martin and Tom's moaning and groaning about their tired legs all sound a little soft! Tony meanwhile brought you Tony's Trials 'German Style'.

Hearing about your long runs has got me thinking and going back over my running log.

For my longest ultra, the highland fling, 53 miles, In the 90 days before the race I ran an average of about 5 miles a day with my long runs all being at or below 20 miles (fetcheveryone where I keep a running log has a training analysis tool that gives you these stats easily, I love stats too)

I'm not sure my body would have survived the long runs Tom and Martin are doing, I suspect the recovery needed would be too long and therefore the impact on my training too much.

So my question is this do you need ultra long runs to run ultras, what are the pros and cons, does it make a difference if your race is a trail race, less repetitive impact on your legs than a road ultra.

Tom and Martin where did you get your ideas for your training plan from, do you know what other comrade runners do?

    Roger

Hi Roger, great question. Listen to this weeks show - but also tune in to forthcoming interviews with Ian Sharman and Ellie Greenwood when we'll put some of those questions to them. Thanks. MY

Great episode. I found your podcast after hearing you interview the IM talk guys and I've really enjoyed it. The Sister Madonna interview was really fun, inspiring, motivational, and funny. I'm not a Catholic, but I love to hear people of any faith talk about how their faith interacts with their training and racing. She's a great example. Listening to her, I don't think she celebrated her 81st birthday last year, I think she celebrated the 52nd anniversary of her 29th birthday.
