Episode 91 - Scott Overall
Released: Wednesday 5th October 2011
In last week's Berlin Marathon GB athlete Scott Overall finished in 5th place and achieved the Olympic A standard time with 2:10:55. Scott talked Martin through his rather special first marathon. Tom didn't have a baby, but did get out foxed at Leeds parkrun... Kenya selected two of their three Olympic marathon men, creating perhaps the most competitive qualification process in history... and someone nicked Tony's bottle... again!

I really enjoyed talking to Scott. He was quite humble about his achievement.

Great interview! Enjoyed the description of the Berlin Marathon from the "inside". Hope to see Scott at London 2012!

Agree. His candidness was breathtaking. And to keep composure when the pacemakers took off at 2 miles was beyond comprehension - I'd have folded there and then (like I've ever had a pacemaker, but you get what I mean!)

A little disappointed with the Chicken names fiasco. Sounds like a bit of backtracking ;-) I thought Tom said in the previous episode that the chicken's would definitely be chosen by the listeners. I think Tom and Hels could now redeem themselves by letting the listeners choose the names of their baby. Hope the birth of little Boston goes well.

Hahahahaha :)
Mmmmm Boston Williams, I could get used to that lol!

Julian dick Ann and George and tummy where the famous 5 weren't they?
There is a great story about Ozzy and chickens. When I get a minute I'll post it

You could have gone for Naoko (after Naoko Takahashi) rather than Mizuki for the Berlin hen. She's also a Japanese runner, also an Olympic Marathon Gold medallist (Sydney 2000) but she was the first woman ever to break the 2:20 barrier (Berlin 2001)...

It really makes my Thursdays to know I can download the latest episode of marathon talk and listen to it to and from work. Great work guys, the work you put into making it certainly pays off. Always gives you something to focus on and think about.
Thanks

Really enjoyed this weeks show and Scotts description of the Munich race. The sound of the show is better than ever and I am delighted the show goes from strength to strength. Its not just in training where hard work pays off!!

Scott's interview was fantastic. I love these insights into the world of elite runners (especially when they make the same mistakes as us mortals, like running past their own bottles and following the wrong pacers). That made my day!

This was a great interview. Being heavily dependent on my Garmin, I am completely in awe of someone running a first marathon at the elite standard with no watch - the mix up of pacers would have had me in tears! My pace varies hugely and I need the visual to keep me on track. This is my challenge next year, running with no watch... I reckon perfect pacing is like perfect pitch, you've either got it or you haven't! A huge congratulations to Scott for a fantastic run, roll on 2012!

Think we should have a collection for Scott - imagine what time he could do if he could afford a watch ;-)
Loved his comment to Martin, 'Ben had the watch, but I couldn't find him!'

Mizuki seems to have stuck and she really quite suits it, but thanks for the alternative ;-)

I suppose the Spice names would be better for The Colonel's chickens. For garden-grazing, egg-laying birds, you chose nice names. I still think you need to add a rooster named Moses.
10th October 2011 12:54:52
I briefly worried that you were championing 'The Colonel' as a new nickname for Tom...
10th October 2011 20:35:36
Tom "The Colonel of Distance" Williams. I like it.

OK that's my favourite interview of the series so far! (just toppling Bruce Fordyce!) The most honest, straight-forward and humble account of an amazing marathon. Loved the mistake at the end with the 2k and it gives me hope that even a 2h 10m runner has days where he drops out of sessions. I'm Irish but I'll certainly also be shouting for Scott Overall in the Olympics next year! You're a legend!

I love Scott's approach to the Garmin - I will now try and give it up, promise !
A great account of a marathon for a top class runner - it certainly helps us mere mortals not to worry so much about getting every little detail in a race as originally planned - sometimes you just have to improvise.
Good luck for 2012 Scott.

I have not run with a watch for the last 4 months. Its been great learning to feel what your body saying. I definitely recommend running to how your body feels.
Saying that I'm saving up to buy me a Garmin! haha
