So, if I was hoping to break the Marathon World record 10 years ago 2:05:41 would break it. But if I did that today I wouldn't even be in the top 10. Wow, I'm glad I didn't plan to beat the world record then. :)

Kelly - my first step is always to simply eat healthy food, cut out as much junk / processed / artificial stuff as possible, and then to exercise six days a week... that normally does the trick. If it doesn't then I'll fiddle with the food in / energy out balance ;)

Great piece on NY marathon and summary on the current high quality of marathon running, certainly the times are impressive.
Keep working on getting that interview with the legend that is Steve Jones. Would be great to hear his views on the current 'standards' and why his record remains.

What a lovely woman Diane Aykroyd is. When the interview started, I was wondering what we listeners were going to get from the next 30 mins or so. But a couple of minutes later, I was totally engrossed by Diane's positive outlook and matter of fact philosophy! Brilliant!

I also really enjoyed the interview and have been thinking about it quite a bit since listening. It brings home what I've always believed - it doesn't matter how fast or slow you run a marathon - you're attempting a physical feat that most people wouldn't even contemplate. It takes persistence and dedication, trust and a whole lot of self belief - all attributes runners need, no matter what speed they go. Those qualities shined through in Diane's interview. Am really looking forward to seeing how she does.

I loved the interview with Diane. She is such an inspiration. I too was a late starter and have really appreciated the way that I have been accepted into the running community with such warmth and encouragement, but it took me a long time to pluck up the courage to join in. Diane talked with such enthusiasm but in a way that 'ordinary' people could relate to. It is people like her that make others realise that they can achieve goals which they would never have imagined possible. I also loved the way that Tom was so supportive and encouraging, and still remembered the way he felt when training for his first marathon, even though he has gone on to achieve amazing things.

Just catching up with the podcasts. I think I might want to dispute that hilliest ten mile road race challenge:
Check out the Templeton Ten Road Race held by the Dundee Road Runners Club each year in November.

I think the phrase is undulating :)

Loved the interview with Diane. I remember her from my early days of parkrunning in Leeds where she frequently used to beat me - impressive as I was then 22 years old. She was always really positive and encouraging and it's great to hear from her again.
Good luck Diane in your marathon!
